http://www.y-gsa.jp/studio/yamamoto/2007/12/post_9.html#more

Buenos Aires, December 12th 2007

Open letter to the Theater Community, Artists, International guests and collaborators of the last ten years of the Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires; to the Cultural Institutions and Attachés, Embassies, the media and general public:

My decision to leave the general direction of the Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires after the completion of its 6 th edition had already been taken. My collaborators can attest to it. What I also believed is that the Festival deserved a transition towards new courses- and decisions- that would take into account the developed experience. There is no need to clarify here the levels of excellence and efficiency this Festival has been able to prove.

However, not even in my darkest dreams could I have ever imagined that the policy of the new Minister of Culture -clearly and sadly- responding to the new Chief of Government of the City, would have forced us to leave the offices in less than 48 hours, having previously decided they would break up all work teams which -after these ten years – have constituted the main pillars of the production of the Festival.

This is not about defending posts but of stating for the record that this attitude of unexpected violence is outlining the new political course: one that tries to invalidate, destroy and erase what has been built in good ways and with unquestionable success until now.

As you read this email the Festival offices will be empty by order of the new authorities. It seems that the motto "whatever made by the previous government should be dismantled" is still alive and kicking in Macrism.

The violence we have been subject to -I will not go into detail as to the manners and terms in which we have been evicted in less than 48 hours- leads us to think that diversity of criteria, dissent and democratic values –so highly defended during the campaign of the PRO Party as well as during their first hours in office- are evidently being overthrown in the light of these attitudes.

All Festival staff was asked to empty and leave the office and go back to their duties on January 15 th to tasks and positions to be determined. And it is this decision that have dumped the work of 10 years, the achievements of the whole team, the pride of having put together a festival with hard work and devotion, with passion and a deep and profound mystique.

Through this letter I tender my irrevocable resignation to the direction of the Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires but –before doing so- I thought it fit to warn the theater community, the media, the audience, international guests and all of those who show interest in culture that we find ourselves before the worst kind of politics, the worst possible way of understanding politics, and the worst flaunting of power.

I will not be an accomplice to that ill-treatment so I denounce it and thus remain open to the solidarity in the light of this abuse, which reinforces the old binary concept of "ones against others" only to prove what we already fully understand and can derive from this kind of thinking.

Thank you for having accompanied me throughout these ten years. I am sure we will meet in better and brighter circumstances. But there is something else I am also sure of: we deserved a different closure. But this is the story of our country.

I think we are still in time of doing something; and I mean with eyes toward the future.

Thank you, once again.
